RIP Poly Styrene (aka Marriane Elliot Said) former lead singer of one of the most influential female fronted punk bands of all time - The X Ray Spex. She lost her battle with breast cancer this passed Monday at the age of 54. Her new cd Generation Indigo was released yesterday (you can purchase here)

Lisa Papineau working on new record with Big Sir

If you have been following Wild Woman Radio for a while you know I absolutely love Lisa Papineau. Originally from RI, she first hit the scene as the lead singer of Pet, a band which released only one record for the Tori Amos label Icicle. Since then she has also fronted the LA band Big Sir and while living in Paris she put out several records under her own name. She is currently in LA working on a new Big Sir project and here is the first look at the new material. Eat it up baby, eat it up!

WWR visits the OMA's

Haven't heard of the OMA's? Well, you're not the only one. I thought I had been living under a rock but it wasn't me. The OMA's (Out Music Awards) were the one's on the shelf for the last few years. Through a lot of hard work, almost exclusively by volunteers, the awards show honoring openly gay musicians was not only revived, but expanded and filmed for television for the first time ever! Look for an edited version of the show to appear on LOGO, air date is unknown.

So Wild Woman Radio was in the house on December 8th at the Webster Hall in NYC. Here are some highlights, including footage from my flip cam.

Our good friend Rachael Sage was the night's only multiple award recipient winning best songwriter and best producer awards.

Best pop song went to Athena Reich for her song "Love is Love"

The awards opened with the theme song for the event "There You Are" performed by Christine Martucci

The evenings highlights included performances by Rachael Sage, Toshi Reagon, Jasper James, a dance performance by the House of Ninja, an acrobatic display by a group called Mantrix (i think that was their name)some fiercely fabulous outfits plus.....

an incredibly moving speech from Kevin Aviance as he accepted his Lifetime Achievement Award

a little Kanye moment as a few boys crashed the stage during Chelley's performance of "I Took the Night'

a segment called Hip Hop Evolution featuring Mack Mistress

To say the night was magical would be stretching it a bit. The event was plagued with disorganization from a faulty will call list (my skills of persuasion seemed more successful than my online ticket purchase lol) to misinformed presenters. BUT at several times the attendance of any previous awards ceremony & the amazing musical performances that will make for a great edited show on LOGO, its easy to see that the 2009 OMA's were just the beginning.

Harvard Teaches of Peaches

Peaches performance at Paradise Rock Club November 16th

Many musicians make their tours larger than life with big budgets, expensive programmed lights, pyrotechnics, etc. Peaches is pure creativity in motion, from the opening entrance in bird like costume to her ‘nude’ leotard, there were at least six costume changes, each re-entrance with choreographed theatrics complete with wigs, props, fake blood & faux Iggy Pop.

Can I say I was blown away by her vocal skills? I was. Early Peaches tracks were mostly talking and light singing. On the most recent cd I Feel Cream she does more full on singing and it was good to see that it wasn’t studio magic. All sounded good live.

I feel I can no longer call myself a tech geek. There are many new creations as electronic instruments (and they aren’t all involving an iphone app) and I can’t keep up. I especially like the jedi light saber Peaches rocked. (if you know the proper name for this piece of awesomeness, please let me know)

As you can expect from her music, her live show is very sexual. When technical problem caused a pause in the show she shouted "Who wants to f*ck me? a good gang bang will pass the time". But Peaches is a well rounded rock star. While in Boston Peaches was honored by Harvard for her achievements in entertainment. She is now an honorary member of the Harvard Lampoon.

Rachael Sage is one of the performers WWR is lucky enough to call friend. She has visited us & performed at our events & taken the time to call in to the show in the past. The picture above is from her record label, Mpress Records, showcase at CMJ last month, where Mieka Pauley, Amber Rubarth, Seth Glier & Antigone Rising also performed. One of the things I love about Rachael's live performances is you'll never see the same show twice. This show in NYC included a very comical improv song harassing her hard working record label staff and an amazing story about wanting to be a stripper when she grows up (that actually explains a few things....jk Rachael!).

Today's blog is to share Rachael's new video for "Too Many Women". If you saw this summer's remake of FAME you would have heard the remix of this song (its also featured on the soundtrack).

As the song goes "Too many women and not enough of you", Rachael Sage is incredibly entertaining and it just doesn't stop. I can't get enough - I'm now addicted to her VLOG! Check out the Glamorous (and not so Glamorous) life on the road in Rachael's VLOGs (featuring WWR's Meredith as tour manager/camera operator extraordinaire). Here's a taste of what happened while touring Scotland.

Rachael has recently been in the studio recording a cover song. Its a surprise, but i'll keep you posted.

Love for the Whip

Lovewhip describe themselves as Boston's sexy electro dance rock band. True. Music fans, like myself, will also note the major influence of Reggae and Dance Hall beats. My love for the whip isn't just a play on words. I have dragged them down to New Haven a couple times to do shows, even building a She's Electro series inspired by the band (and a particularly electrifying picture of front woman Erin Harpe).

I received my advance copy of Love Electric (released Nov. 17th) this weekend & it hasn't left my car stereo. While they are 'Boston's best party band' complete with altered covers of pop hits from people like Missy Elliot, they are spot on with their original sound, crafting of catchy pop hooks & Mistress Erin's impressive vocals.

The song "Automatic" practically screams for radio play. Of course I didn't need convincing, but check it out for yourself - here is a live performance of the song:

Love Electric is currently available for pre-order and you can stream many of the songs on their website and will be available for regular purchase beginning next Tuesday.

Girl in A Coma: Revival of the Fittest

The name Girl in a Coma doesn't really evoke the imagery of kick ass rock trio, but it will when your done with this blog. For those old enough to remember the song "Girlfriend in a Coma" by the Smiths, you'll understand the reference and the vocal similarities between the soulful front woman Nina Diaz and Smith's main man Morrissey.

What I really love about GIAC is their versatility. Not just with a change of speed or melodic direction, but in genre and influence. Listening to their latest cd Trio B.C., I've become very curious what music they've grown up with & found inspiration in. While I'm sure they are easily referred to as a punk trio, individual songs seem to have a trunk firmly planted in roots rock and blues. Watch the video for "El Monte"

My friends often hear me complaining about the lack of femme rock bands these days. Its not that the ladies aren't playing, its that they aren't getting the support & the buzz to bring them to a certain level. GIAC is one of the bands that has cut through that a bit. They have a well produced album that sounds both original and produced at a quality that is 'radio friendly'. Watch the video for the more upbeat "Static Mind"

Plus, they totally know how to bring it on stage! I caught their show in Northampton, MA at the Ironhorse a couple weeks ago (excuse the iphone quality pics)and found myself pogo'ing for the first time in years. Amazing energy on stage.

In my opinion, these ladies are one film or TV placement away from breaking through. But don't wait for the music supervisors to discover them, get their new cd Trio BC now. Blackheart Records store

PS 2/3 of the band is queer. Doesn't necessarily make them cooler, but it doesn't hurt. lol

Antigone Rises Again

There is always a sadness when you hear a band has broken up. You know each member will go on, hopefully, to produce new exciting music on their own or with new partners, but nothing will ever be quite the same.

Such is the story of the band Antigone Rising. You can read some of their history here (i love wiki but take it with a grain of salt...or 3) as the band has grown through the years, and then officially broke up. The new Antigone Rising won't be what you remember. There are new members, most notably front woman (and songwriter) Nini Camps. But you may be able to stamp "NEW & IMPROVED" on their label. These girls are back and ready for action.

This week Wild Woman Radio had the world premier of their single "Weed & Wine". Now I know you are all excited, but its going to be a minute before they finish recording their album. I'm grateful they chose to share a track so early. In the meantime, catch them kicking around NYC playing a few gigs. Check out their website for details.

Radio show changes

The station that is home to Wild Woman Radio, WNHU 88.7 FM in West Haven, CT, is undergoing some programming changes. What does that mean for the show?

Wild Woman Radio will air on the fm broadcast signal on Mondays 2-4pm EST. It will stream simultaneously ib wnhu.net. For those of you who have been listening online, you can continue to listen on wnhu.net on Sundays from 9-11pm EST. Confusing? A little. Basically you have more ways to listen.

Due to this change it is unclear where the playlist will be posted on the station website so I will now be posting the playlist in this blog.

Summer Concert Blur

So, as you may have noticed, I meant to continue blogging about the concerts of the summer. Unfortunately, I was constantly on the road & never really stopped to write. So here is a bit of a speedy recap on some of the great shows I had the chance to see including Cyndi Lauper, Mates of State, The Rescues & St. Vincent.

St. Vincent at Pearl St. in Northampton, MA

This was my first time catching St. Vincent's live show. I really like her artistry as a songwriter and some of her recordings are very beautiful, but in the live show there is an energy and aggression that now makes the recordings seem flat in comparison. She is a great guitar player to watch and surrounded herself with incredible musicians that quickly switched instruments from flute to clarinet to saxophone to violin...a great mini orchestra.

The Rescues at the Canal Room in NYC

The Rescues are Kyler England, Adrienne Gonzalez, Gabriel Mann, and Rob Giles, all amazing singer/songwriters on their own who came together to form an amazing collective. You may have heard their music on TV (Grey's Anatomy, Army Wives, Guiding Light) which is exactly how I first became acquainted with Kyler in particular (thats her rockin' the spoons). Their music is smooth & delicious like soft serve ice cream (sorry, i'm a bit hungry while writing this). Each of them seem to have the gift to craft a catchy pop tune, but what makes it even more enjoyable is the beauty of their voices, both individually and the way they blend together in complex harmony.

The Mates of State at Cafe Nine in New Haven

Some of you may know that Mates of State call East Haven, CT home. Lucky us! They played a small show at Cafe Nine with some friends back in June. I've seen them previously at larger clubs, but when i heard hours prior they would be at the Nine I had to cancel other plans and haul ass downtown. It was well worth it. I have been extremely supportive their music on the radio show and I do appreciate their music although, I have, in the past, found them a bit overwhelming with happy, bouncy tunes (all of which are fun in singular doses). At this show i really noticed their growth as a duo and as songwriters. There was much more variety in their songs and their performance. I look forward to seeing what's next for them.

Cyndi Lauper & Rosie O'Donnell at Proctor's Theater Schenectady, NY

No pictures of this one. I was sitting in the front row balcony...beyond the reach of the iphone's prowess. The show started with a 25 minute stand up routine from Rosie that included talk of strap-ons & oral sex that had me blushing (i was sitting next to my parents). It reminded me of how I loved her comedy prior to her talk show days....ah yes, i remember it well. I am almost ashamed to admit this was my first time seeing Cyndi. I know, its practically blasphemous of me so I couldn't pass on this show. She was fantastic. I don't know where she gets her energy from as a performer. She was running all over the stage & down the aisles belting out the tunes as if she just wrote them yesterday. She did all of her hits and a couple of her newer dance tracks (did i mention the gays were out in force? I never knew there were so many in my hometown!!!) where was I?? Oh, yes, the kicker. The kicker was Rosie was one of her back up singers and even played drums some! As I left the theater I realized some of the most memorable moments of the night were Cyndi and Rosie bantering in between songs, talking about shopping, Madonna's sexuality, Oprah's money, LMAO. Seriously, if Rosie and Cyndi got a talk show on cable I would sooo tune in.

Summer Concerts 1: Tracy Chapman

I have to admit that i tend to forget about Tracy Chapman. Every couple of years I receive a new cd from her, listen a couple times, fall in love with her songwriting, give it a few spins on radio and then just forget. I do, however, remember how amazing she was to see perform live and snatched a ticket for her current tour.

Tracy is a powerful performer. She has a quiet strength. She is soft spoken but sings with a big voice produced effortlessly. It is truely as if the music is just passing through her. It isn't something that can be understood in a youtube clip but experienced in person. She brings a calming energy to her performances that is palpable to those in the audience. Her band was great, highlighted on a James Brown style rendition of "Give me One Reason", but she she showed her versatility performing a couple songs solo, including one on a strum stick, whipped out her bongos and even sat down to jam on a cajun box drum.

Seeing her at the Calvin Theater (august 1st) reminded me of all the songs I had forgotten: "Fast Car" "Talkin bout a Revolution" "Baby Can I Hold You" "Smoke & Ashes" "Crossroads". I had so loved her 2005 cd Where You Live and its commentary on American politics, but had forgotten the politics of her earlier music. As a songwriter she is equal parts lover and fighter.

Even as I'm writing this I'm reminding myself of other beautifully written songs by Ms. Chapman: "Never Yours" "New Beginning" "Change". This time I hope I don't forget.

Regina Spektor: Far hits close to home

Regina Spektor's fifth album "Far" hit shelves in the stores and the itunes vault this week. If you liked Begin to Hope, you will enjoy the new record(and by that i mean collection of songs...not that big black circle with grooves). I was a little apprehensive after hearing the producers involved with the project, but this is all Regina, all the way. Her lyrical, melodic style is uniquely hers. Her uncanny ability to cram extra words into phrases but actually make it sound natural ceases to suprise me, all the while camoflauging classical piano training and arpegiated chords as contemporary pop music. The outcome is both beautiful and catchy. Well done.

The first single "Laughing with" seems to have confused some bloggers and reviewers. NO, Joan Osborne is not the only person allowed to write a pop song about God. I think Regina is now the reigning Queen on who can mention God the most in one song, I challenge someone to knock her from that spot (yes i counted and she says it over 30 times). The song is about the human response to Him when in different life changing situations, the chorus pointing out that "God can be funnny" and we're laughing along.

Tracks like "Blue Lips" and "Genius Next Door" play like painted landscapes with brush strokes flowing over semi-traditionalist piano accompaniments. Just lovely. My favorite, however, is "Machine". This song reminds me of why she toured opening for the Dresden Dolls and she could still fit in along side them today. "Machine" is another ballad, but this one with an accelarated drum track, a heavy hitting left hand on the bassline and an occasional feedbacking guitar underlying the chorus of "hooked into machine".

Reading the title "Dance Athem of the 80's" had me a little scared Regina was going to channel Bananarama. But alas, nothing to fear...

The beauty of simplicity in pop music is demonstrated wonderfully on "Eet". This song is a great reminder for any songwriter to forget the rules, throw them out and just feel. I won't bore you with specifics of what not to do's because i've just been pleasantly reminded to ignore them.

Looking forward....if you like Regina, look for the new cd from A Fine Frenzy, a singer songwriter project working on the debut follow up, due out probably by late summer. A little bunny rabbit played me the single and i think ur gonna like it!!!

I Feel Peaches and Cream

As many o friend is packing their bags en route to Bonnaroo at this hour, i'm currently awake for much different reasons: There is still wine in the bottle and a new Peaches cd to listen to! Yes, the reigning electro queen is back with more sexual chocolate than Brownie Troop 605 knows what to do with (i think it may be buried in the thin mints this year). The new disc I Feel Cream features her belting out R&B style vocals over retro electro hollowed out tracks as on the song "Talk to Me", bringing back the industrial baseline on "Show Stopper", rocking the new wave ballad on "Lose You" and bustin' out the gate with more rap spittin' on "Mommy Complex" and "Billionaire". In some ways its more of the same. Don't expect Peaches to have 'matured' lyrically. I've often had conversations with friends about female artists, such as Peaches, that are sexually explicit with their lyrics and if that innately makes them less feminist, or furthermore, does it make them female chauvinists or sexist? I think a lot of it has to do with context. Peaches? I think she is a free spirit, sexual being who is trying to have a bit of fun and doesn't take herself that seriously. If that makes you uncomfortable, then skip to the next blog. If not, check out I Feel Cream with the volume on 11 and dance around the house in your underwear, or less, Peaches would approve:)

Sing-a-long Songs

Somehow i completely missed when Italian singer Elisa released her 2008 album and toured the US. I recently received a few of her mp3s for airplay, but this is the track i've been keeping on my media player playlist this week.

The Rescues "Break Me Out"

The Rescues are Kyler England, Adrianne, Gabriel Mann and Rob Jiles. They all perform separately as singer-songwriters and came together to work together for the album. All of these talents, both together and solo, have been featured on many television programs and you just may have heard their songs on shows like Grey's Anatomy, Army Wives or Guiding Light. That is exactly how i was first exposed to their music. Definitely check out all of their music, but this is the song thats stuck on repeat in my brain today (here they are performing live at Hotel Cafe).

Brandi Carlile "The Story"

I kept running into this song last week. On the "in store" radio, in some television show I was watching and i finally figured i needed to download the track cause its just brilliant. If you haven't heard it before, Brandi is a Seattle based singer/songwriter and this song came out back in 2008. Its so catchy, but a bit more challenging for the sing-a-long (but go ahead, turn the volume up and give her a try). Here she is performing it live on Jools Holland.

I'm also still listening to the new Tori Amos CD Abnormally Attracted to Sin and the Sam Phillips cd Don't Do Anything (released in 2008).

Project Walkway: an Ideats Guide to Fashion (still about music)

Wild Woman Radio is pleased to announce their first Ideat Village event Project Walkway, Tuesday, June 16th from 7-10pm at Temple Plaza (behind the Shubert). This is outdoors, and, as with all Ideat Village events, totally free to the public. Project Walkway is WWR’s twisted take on the popular reality competition, hosted by New Haven’s most fabulous drag Ms. Robin Banks. While contestants pick out their materials and create their ensembles, using unorthodox design implements, such as duct tape, the crowd will be entertained by two of New Haven’s best Atrina and Welcome. Contestants will sign up upon arrival, at 7pm.

Why oh Wye?

A couple weeks ago I was hanging out at Cafe Nine, New Haven's best music spot, and stuck around not knowing anything about who was scheduled to perform. Why? Just had a good feeling (and a good beer buzz). I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my favorite New Haven bands, Welcome, load there gear in and I knew it was more than just the beer I stayed for.

Turns out the headlining band was Merge Records duo Wye Oak from Baltimore. I hadn't heard their music before, but immediately took notice. Singer/guitarist Jenny Wasner, whose voice echoes the sweet sounds of Cat Power's Chan Marshall or folkie Sam Phillips, arpeggiates the chords on her electric guitar and hammers home blues riffs while tapping in and out of distortion. Meanwhile, her drummer/keyboardist Andy Stack, plays a traditional drum kit with his right hand, complete with fills and syncopated snare hits, while stroking the bassline out on a keyboard with his left. Together they reminded me of a more mellow version of Mary Timony's last touring project (The Mary Timony Band, also a duo). To clarify, thats a thumbs up! They have two cds out on Merge: If Children (2008) and The Knot (2009), neither of which have I yet had the privilege of listening to in completion. While you and I wait for the cds to arrive, here is a clip of their performance of "Take it in" at SXSW earlier this year!

Pompadour is the new mullet

It wasn't that long ago Peaches sported the old skool mullet, rockin' it a la Kip Winger himself. Then I witnessed many a hipster lesbian modernize the hairdo with sharp angles and tipped scales of justice. (bare with me, I promise this is a music blog)

Lately, I'm noticing the fashionable pompadour return to the music scene, and its not just for rockabilly any more.

For those who listen to the show, or read the playlists, you will be familiar with artist Janell Monae. I praise her music for being truly unique in a sea of cookie cutter reproductions, something that is always a surprise to hear from an artist on a major label (Ms. Monae is signed to Diddy's label Bad Boy Records, a division of Atlantic). Her songs are simultaneously retro and futuristic, something she mimics in her appearance.

Now, jump across the pond to british electro-pop group La Roux, who recently toured opening for Lily Allen with their danceable tracks reminiscent of 80's brits Eurythmics or Yaz. Singer & synth player Elly Johnson must use a lot of hairspray at all times.

Her pomp (yes, I'm abbreviating the word out of laziness)is often off to the side or spiked in the front, like a cross with the chicken hawk classic.

Is this blog really about fashionable hair? No, its about pop music, which is undeniably cross stitched to high gloss hair, make up, and clothing. And it gave me an excuse to talk about these two candies I can't stop poppin'.

Like many of the Wild Woman Radio listeners, I have been addicted to the sounds of Tori Amos since the first breath of Little Earthquakes graced the headphones of my walkman (and played that tape til its pitch faltered). Over the years, I've continued to be impressed with her work and her treatment of albums as more than just a random grouping of songs, but a body of work. In the ever-changing music world where music is often collected as a singular mp3, its artists like Tori that create the demand for the listener to purchase the full cd (or download in its entirety). Her latest collection, Abnormally Addicted to Sin, is released this Tuesday with a version of the album that will contain a dvd of accompanying videos (fans make sure you grab ahold of this one).

I'm previewing the cd as I type this. I keep hitting replay on a track called "Strong Black Vine" featuring a great string arrangement and rock n' roll vocals that make me wonder what a live performance of the song would be like if she were to step out from behind the piano and grab hold of a mic stand (a la Steve Tyler...only actually sexy). On Tonight's Wild Woman Radio, we will preview a couple tracks - tune in to hear them first! Also, new music from Jill Sobule, Neko Case and other surprises.

Tori's tour was also just announced, but alas, no CT date so far. Make sure to buy tix early for NYC or Boston shows.

15 year anniversary!

WNHU’s Wild Woman Radio (thats us!) celebrates its 15th anniversary with a special party/concert at Café Nine on Saturday, May 23rd featuring electro-rock band Lovewhip, New Haven’s Joanie Loves Tchotchokes and dj bixby (aka Sarah Cornelius of Wild Woman Radio). Tickets will be $6 at the door.

Wild Woman Radio was sprouted on WNHU to give a voice to the talented female musicians who are under represented on commercial radio and who offer an alternative to the Barbie-like pop singers created by the major record labels. The program has witnessed the positive upswings in the 1990’s, including the buzz of the politically charged riotgrrrl movement and the overwhelming support and success of the Lilith Fair Tour, and continued to support those artists during the ensuing backlash that immediately followed. One only has to view the Alternative music chart (Radio & Records top 40 alternative currently has 2 female fronted bands listed) to understand why this program is still as relevant today as it was when it began. The first seven or eight years of the show’s history was spearheaded by Helen Sherman, who retired from radio in 2001 and passed the torch to Sarah Cornelius. Other djs involved over the years include Pam Smith (currently hosting Amazon Radio on WPKN), Sharon Walsh, Robin Goldberg, Julie Loomis, Christine Malash and Meredith Tarr. Over the last five years, Wild Woman Radio as also supported female artists in presenting a concert series in New Haven and has hosted The Dresden Dolls, Kristin Hersh, Bitch, The Butchies, Awry (now My Brightest Diamond), Heloise & the Savoir Faire, Quitzow, Mieka Pauly, Patti Rothberg and more.

Part of Boston’s underground but up-and-coming electro scene, Lovewhip is much more than just a band. They are an electro dance rock phenomenon. Living up to the name Lovewhip, they create a live show with the passionate vocals and dance moves of the “soulful electro-rock diva” (says the Boston Phoenix) Erin Harpe a.k.a. Empress Erin, she also rips out screaming electric guitar riffs as she taunts and teases the crowd. Building on influences as diverse as Blondie, Beck, Sean Paul, Missy Elliot, the B52’s and the Cars, Lovewhip has created a sound all their own. www.lovewhip.net

New Haven music scene veteran Kriss Santala fronts this great garage rock trio, bringing out the punk many previous fans hadn’t seen from her (having been involved in some quite softer singer/songwrtier projects). The band has been recording this spring and should have their first disc out soon.

DJ BIXBY:
DJ Bixby, aka Sarah Cornelius, is the current host of Wild Woman Radio and as a live dj spins danceable female centric music including electro, post punk, underground hip hop, 80’s alternative, etc.

Rachael Sage last performed for us at our very first event at Cafe Nine. Don't miss her return next Wednesday, April 15th in a very special singer/songwriter night with special guest Baby G, an old timey folk group from right here in New Haven.

Rachael is an award winning songwriter with a gift for quirky on-stage banter that makes every performance unique. The last time I saw her she improvised a song about me getting struck by lightning (something that in reality was more of a near miss) and inviting an audience member to go to a wedding with her. No promises you'll be propositioned, but your enjoyment is definitely guaranteed. Rachael's going to have a trio: herself on sparkly keys and vox, plus Russ Johnson on trumpet and Quinn (who's toured with Tracy Chapman for years :) on a cool little cocktail drum kit.Here is a little bit of what to expect:
